Mullum kids dream big learn about tiny homes

On Tuesday the 27th of November, over 100 Year 7 students from Mullumbimby High School flooded the Humpy Co. Display Village in Bangalow. Loud, fun and a whole lot of tiny (people and pods), Brian and Travis held court and shared the magical story of The Humpy.

When we discovered that the students were studying a unit on tiny living we welcomed them with open arms. We took the students on a tour of the village so that they could check out the Humpy range and begin to imagine the possibilities. The creative juices were flowing as the students dreamed up ideas about ways to lead a simpler lifestyle that would leave a lighter environmental footprint on our planet.

Our master craftsmen Brian and Travis took them on a tour of the factory. The students learnt about the raw materials sustainably sourced to create these flat-packed backyard pods and were invited to ask questions about the design and build process. Our father and son team inspired the students to follow their passions and shared the joy of being able to love what you do for work.

With a passion for educating young people, Brian and Travis talked about our customers, and how the pods are delivered, installed and eventually used. Beyond being tiny homes for those trading space for simplicity, the students learned about versatility in design, and how our backyard pods are limitless, space-creating solutions.

Tiny homes, granny flats, music studio, computer room, home office, a dog grooming parlour, big-kid’s bedroom, art studio, home gym, a pop-up coffee shop, all the way through to an elves gift-wrapping hut for Christmas – these were just some of the ideas that these incredible minds had about how to use a Humpy.

This high-energy morning was just as gratifying for us, as we learned about how these young minds were being positively shaped to live a mindful, sustainable future. The team at Humpy are big advocates for being involved in community-based learning, and see it as our responsibility to support our schools and the local community. Like Socrates said, ‘The secret of change is to focus all of your energy not on fighting the old, but on building the new.’

As we continue to build Humpies with a focus on lifestyle, and sustainable design we will ensure that the quality of the environment is protected and enhanced for future generations. A story that we can continue to share.
